The Bridgestone Turanza T005A is a flagship tyre so quiet and comfortable, they fit it to the world’s best cars
SINGAPORE — If you want to go trekking, you wear hiking boots. If you want to lounge around the kopi tiam, a pair of flip-flops will do.
There’s footwear for every occasion, and to some extent the same is true of tyres.
If you want to make your car more fuel efficient, for example, have a set of Bridgestone Ecopias fitted.

But what if you could only have one pair of shoes to wear for the next three years? You would probably choose an all-rounder that was comfortable enough for everyday use and grippy enough to be safe in a variety of conditions.

A BLACK ART
Creating a quiet tyre is a black art, but in the Turanza T005A you can see the artistry at work. It’s on the tread pattern.
The sipes (the grooves that drain water) are cut at a steep angle, which can help to soften the tyre impact on the road. The treadblocks are also variable in pitch so they hit the road at uneven intervals, and that prevents noise from building up at certain frequencies.
The GR-100 was already remarkably quiet, but the new T005A reduces tyre noise by more than a decibel — that might not sound a lot but it means the new tyre produces around 30 percent less sound energy.
Making the T005A smoother was another feat of engineering. The redesigned sidewall (the part of the tyre where you find all the lettering and markings) improves ride comfort, while the T005A’s contact patch (its basic footprint on the road) has also been optimised to help the tyre apply consistent pressure on the road. That reduces shock and impact noise — the same way you move more quietly if you step lightly instead of stamping your feet.
But perhaps the most meaningful improvement of all is to the grip performance, especially in the wet. The improved contact patch that makes for a smoother ride also enhances grip by maximising the amount of tyre tread in contact with the road.
And there’s a clever trick in the way the treadblock edges have been chamfered (or gently rounded off); that means they deform less under hard braking, which again maximises the amount of rubber on the road.
SECRET RECIPE
But the secret of the new Turanza’s improvement is in its recipe. A new formulation with Nano Pro-Tech keeps the silica compound in the tyre from rubbing together and generating excess heat and energy loss.

That helps the tyre to last longer, but it also produces concrete results: in a test using to identical cars, Bridgestone engineers found that stopping distances in the wet from 60km/h were more than 2m shorter with the Turanza T005A, compared to the older GR-100.
That’s half a car length — which could make all the difference between a safe emergency stop and an expensive one involving two damaged cars!
It’s all the characteristics above that make the Turanza T005A the flagship touring tyre for Bridgestone. It’s also why the new tyre can be found as a factory-fitted tyre for premium cars of all sizes. They don’t leave important characteristics like comfort, quietness and safety to chance.

AN EXPERT OPINION Earlier this year some members of the motoring press were invited to a private test track by Bridgestone to try the Turanza T005A. Krado Lim, the editor of Rev Magazine, the leading periodical in Singapore for aftermarket parts and car tuning, was one of them. After testing the new tyre back-to-back against the Turanza GR-100, this is what he had to say: “Getting behind the wheel, we could put the cars through a high-speed lane change and a spirited gymkhana-like style circuit. Driving the T005A after the GR-100, we immediately could feel that the T005A gave the car a better composure through high speed lane changes as well as high speed cornering. Even after charging into the corner, the tyre loads up nicely without feeling the tread squirm, which can be unsettling for everyday drivers.”
