Paris, France - On March 22, 2017, French lubricants company Motul announced its increasing involvement with the The Dakar Rally by becoming the official lubricant partner for the iconic rally event.
Motul is of course no stranger to motorsport (see below), and has been involved in the Dakar Rally for many years: In 1989 it supported the Honda Dakar team to victory, and saw success with two other teams in 2016, Toyota Auto Body and Polaris Xtremeplus. The brand replaces 2016 partner, Total/Elf, which is also French.

As the lubricant partner, Motul’s Technical Team will be on site during the rally stages to provide technical support to its partner teams. As it is with other forms of motorsport, Motul boasts on racing what it sells, and will provide lubricants and fluids such as its 300V oil to the teams.
The Dakar Rally is famed as one of the toughest races in all of motorsport and first began in 1978 as the Paris-Dakar Rally. Involving motorcycles, cars, buggies, trucks and more, the race evolved into one of the biggest single-rally events in the world. It’s from the bikes that competed in the event that the first adventure motorcycles as we know them appeared, such as the Yamaha Tenere and Honda Africa Twin.

In 2008, the murder of seven people in Mauritania and the threat of terrorist activity at such as high profile event forced its cancellation, and from 2009 onwards the rally found a new home in South America, with 2016’s route stretching across Argentina and Bolivia. 2018’s route will see a new route that includes Peru, a detour through the Ica Desert as well as the Andes mountain range, skirting the famous Lake Titicaca.
Motul is well-known as a brand that’s tremendously involved in motorsport. It’s the title sponsor of a handful of MotoGP races, for the World Superbike Championship. It’s also the official lubricant partner for the FIM Endurance World Championship, The Roof Of Africa Enduro, the Isle of Man TT in motorcycling, and the King Of Europe/Nations Drift Series and the La Carrera Panamerica.

Besides this it’s also involved in numerous other racing series in various levels, such as a technical partner with participating teams in the 24 Hours of LeMans, FIA WEC, Super GT, Pikes Peak and more.
