Ferrari’s new flagship and the brand’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) to date. We first laid eyes on it in 2019 at the anniversary event of official Ferrari dealer Ital Auto. Check out our full gallery of the SF90 in that story, too. The headline grabber is that this is Ferrari’s most powerful road car to date, with 1,000hp, and does 0-100km/h in 2.5-seconds. It costs ‘at least’ S$1.5m without a COE, or options.
The SF90 can do sub-30km on its battery pack, but even if it’s EV Weekend now we put that aside in the quest for the loud, proud need for speed. 1,000hp is more than enough to get us jittery, and our handful of laps was honestly a little bit of a blur. Not because the car is too fast or too powerful, but that it’s remarkably progressive and fun, and balanced to drive.
We could feel it had lots more to give and could push a little more each lap – the surprise here is that the SF90 doesn’t feel like it’s going to throw you through the window, climb through and kerb-stomp you after. Turning off all the driver aids for the ‘pure’ experience would be a totally different ballgame of course, and we’ve not the deepness of talent or pocket for that.
The magic is the electronics of course, which Ferrari has designed to help normal drivers wring some excitement and a little naughty slip of the tail – that was more obvious in the Roma where instructor Eugene Oh had a little sideways fun on his demo lap – but less in the all-wheel drive SF90.
But as usual, having a pro demonstrate the car’s abilities is always more illuminating. Riding shotgun with Sean Hudspeth with the car delivering full power in ‘no holds barred’ Qualify mode, the SF90 delivered ridiculous acceleration. While it’s difficult to split hairs when it comes to sub 3.5-second acceleration these days, the SF90’s feathery 1.6-tonne weight means it’s far more agile than any EV, and very planted. Hudspeth told us the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres provide a tremendous amount of grip even on Changi’s dusty tarmac. If we wanted to get it loose, he said, it would be at the end of all the hot laps of the day.
