Driving Experience

The Octavia shares its powerplant with its fellow Volkswagen Group platform mates, namely the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. This means a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 150hp and 250Nm of torque and a a 48-volt mild hybrid setup is the sole drivetrain available for the Octavia here.

The mild hybrid setup effectively allows the Octavia to coast with the engine shut off, and reduce some load on the engine as the mild hybrid system is able to drive some of the car’s electrical functions. The car can also operate with just two of the engine’s four cylinders running, thereby improving overall efficiency.

Skoda quotes an average fuel consumption figure of 5.3 litres per 100km, which is obviously an ideal figure if you have a light foot. But even if you’re just going about your daily business without driving particularly frugally, getting 6.0L/100km is actually a realistic target you can achieve in the Octavia.

Part of that could probably boil down the Octavia’s generally relaxed driving demeanour. This is a car that doesn’t really encourage you to pull off any hooligan stunts, although there is enough power in reserve if you need to pick up speed for a quick overtaking manoeuvre. Instead, the Octavia feels more like a long-legged highway cruiser, with its utterly smooth and linear power delivery, matched with its impeccable ride quality.

The overall sense you get is that the Octavia feels remarkably composed in nearly everything it does, whether you’re slinging the car through a corner, or building up speed on the highway. There’s a remarkable breadth of competence to this car, but it definitely majors in comfort, and there’s a noticeably big car feel to the driving experience. In many ways, it feels closer in its drive to its bigger Superb brother than its Golf cousin.
