Tesla started handing cars over to buyers this morning in a move that clouds the picture for parallel importers

SINGAPORE — The wait is over: Tesla has delivered its first cars to customers here. The American electric car company started to hand over brand new Model 3 vehicles to buyers this morning, weeks after administrative glitches put back deliveries.

Sources tell us Covid-19 restrictions mean the company is delivering two cars at any given time, with the handovers taking place at Tesla’s new showroom and servicing centre on Lorong 8 Toa Payoh.

The Business Times reports that Tesla has leased the 58,743 sq ft facility for up to 20 years from Firmus Capital, a private equity real estate investment manager.

Tesla is also said to be opening retail centres at Raffles City and Jewel at Changi. The brand unveiled its first Superchargers in Singapore on July 19th.

Having officially started deliveries in Singapore, Tesla is said to be mulling over what to do about parallel imported cars. Sources say Tesla will service cars that it did not sell, but may not extend warranty coverage to parallel imported cars registered after today. The main takeaway from today’s deliveries could well be: If you want a new Tesla, get thee to Toa Payoh.
