Toyota BZ4X electric crossover revealed in production form

Interior

At 4690mm x 1860mm x 1650mm (length x width height), the car is less tall than a RAV4 and comparable to the Harrier SUV in size (4,740mm x 1,855mm x 1660mm), though it has a considerably longer wheelbase: 2,850mm compared to 2,690mm, which should make for a roomy interior.

Inside, we see the modern EV playbook again with unique Toyota twists. The brand says it’s been designed with ‘comfort, spaciousness…and the ambience of a living room’, emphasising space and usability.

The photos don’t show the lower parts of the cabin but we can safely assume a flat floor for rear passenger comfort. Toyota quotes 452-litres of boot space without folding the seats down.

The front has a huge centre console – presumably for lots of useful stowage space – with a floating design seeing the rotary gear shifter and some controls on top, and a charging station below with USB-C ports.

The biggest eye-catcher here is the large central infotainment screen. Toyota doesn’t quote a measurement just yet, but it looks to be at least 12-inches. The cockpit section sees a minimalist design with a 7.0-inch TFT instrument panel.

CarBuyer’s take?

Those dimensions and performance also put it exactly where Toyota needs to be: In the thick of the modern EV segment, which feature similarly-sized, fully-electric SUVs such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq, and Tesla Model Y.

Toyota (and Honda) has been accused of dragging its feet when getting to the EV business – considering the cars mentioned above are the second-gen of full-production EVs to hit the market from those brands, but the BZ4X shows its shifted its considerable efforts into building a competitive EV in double quick time.
