At S$173,888 with COE, the Harrier isn’t exactly cheap but it represents a unique offering in midsize SUVs – it’s mainstream yes, but with premium features and a slightly higher position than a RAV4, as explained.

If it were our money, we’d skip the petrol model entirely and go for the Harrier Premium Hybrid model : It has everything the Luxury has, besides the fancy roof and rear-view mirror camera, so at S$9k less it’s a shoo-in for those who want to save a bit of cash.

Buyers already do that here, says Toyota: Just like the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, the Harrier Hybrid is already selling well here with the majority of those sold being the hybrid version.

The Kia Sorento feels more premium than its badge suggests, has lots of tech, and is more frugal than a petrol, but it’s a very different beast

Because of its position, at the S$150k-S$170k mark, alternatives mean you either go up or down in size, there’s nothing directly equal to the Harrier right now. You could get a larger, seven-seat mainstream SUV like a Kia Sorento, or a small luxury SUV like a BMW X1 or Audi Q3. If you want a hybrid SUV of similar size, the closest would be the BMW X3 xDrive30e, but it’s a plug-in hybrid, and significantly more expensive.

The interesting thing is, even if you don’t want a Harrier you can get a Lexus SUV for this money – the excellent Lexus UX, which is a size down, but very much a Lexus and has a hybrid variant too.

Conclusion

The Harrier is no longer a Lexus in disguise. It’s actually evolved into something with more of its own identity, and occupying a unique spot as a premium SUV with plenty of features and tech.

But the key to the car’s success is its ability to grip a carbuyer where it matters most: The wallet. The hybrid version is the default choice, thanks to rebates, and the Harrier Hybrid cements the fact that 2021 is the year of the hybrid SUV, with the Harrier leading the harrying.
