Alpine reveals hardcore A110 R for the track

Alpine has unveiled the A110 R, a lightweight version of the A110 that has been stripped out for the track; available on an indent basis only for Singapore

Alpine has unveiled a new version of its A110 sports car, with a stripped out, lightweight model called the A110 R. The car is designed as an uncompromising track-focused car, and Alpine states that the ‘R’ stands for ‘Radical’, to reflect on its hardcore nature.

The A110 R will sit atop the Alpine A110 range, above the current line-up which now consists of the base A110, the comfort-oriented A110 GT, and the sportier A110 S. There is no word yet on the A110 R’s availability for Singapore, but given its track-oriented slant, it is unlikely to attract a huge customer base here anyway.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Wearnes Automotive, the official dealer for Alpine here, says that the A110 R will be offered on an indent basis for Singapore, and customers who place an order can expect to take delivery at the end of 2023.

The Alpine A110 R weighs just 1,082kg, which is 34kg lighter than the A110 S, and most of the weight savings have been derived from using lightweight materials such as carbon fibre for the bonnet, wheels and rear ‘window’, installing lighter bucket seats, replacing the rear glass with an aluminium panel, and removing the noise insulation from the mid-mounted engine bay.

The interior too also underlines the car’s track-focused nature, with the use of six-point racing harnesses and pull straps instead of door handles. On the outside, the carbon fibre roof remains unpainted, while the car is also available in the matt blue paintwork of the F1 car.

But aside from shaving weight, Alpine has also worked on sharpening up the A110 to transform it into the R. Working with the engineers from the Alpine F1 team, Alpine has given the A110 R an aerodynamic package that now includes a new rear spoiler, redesigned side skirts, rear diffuser, flat undercarriage, and streamlined alloy wheel design, all of which combine to boost downforce and reduce drag to give the car even greater stability in the corners, and achieve higher speeds on the straights.

The A110 R also sits 10mm lower than the A110 S, and it comes with hydraulically-adjustable dampers that can drop the car a further 10mm for the “ultimate on-track experience”, according to Alpine. The springs and anti-roll bars have also been stiffened up, and the A110 R comes outfitted with Michelin PS Cup 2 semi-slick tyres as standard for greater cornering grip and durability on track.

The brakes have been uprated too, and now features 320mm composite discs from Brembo that are accompanied by bespoke cooling scoops on the front bumper designed by Alpine specifically of the car.

Power-wise, the A110 R uses the same 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder engine that produces 300hp, matching the A110 S. With the weight savings and aerodynamic enhancements though, the A110 R is now able to go from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds, 0.3 seconds quicker than the A110 S, and reach a top speed of 285km/h. Alpine has also tweaked the exhaust of the A110 R for a fruitier roar, while power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
