Interior and tech

The 2 Series AT gets a radically-improved cabin with lots of digital features as standard – not something you could say about the previous model. BMW has cribbed lots of its fancy features from cars like the iX and scaled them down into the 2AT.

We did not expect the 2AT to be like this car – BMW’s new tech powerhouse, the iX electric SUV

Like the iX, there’s dual displays which are separate screens but combined under a single pane of glass, in what BMW calls the BMW Curved Display. It’s not a EQS-style massive thing, but it certainly does look more elegant than before.

This setup, with a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and 10.25-inch driver’s display, is standard on all 2AT models. The former packs BMW’s newest infotainment OS, BMW OS 8, also as first seen on the iX, with a different operating layout and brighter colours.

With that the previous ‘Driving Experience Control’ switch/modes now becomes ‘My Modes’, i.e. Personal, Sport and Efficient.  Like the newest BMWs, control is via touchscreen or the Intelligent Personal Assistant voice system.

The controller is set on a ‘floating’ platform with storage beneath it. Unlike the related 1 Series, it seems the 2AT now has shift-by-wire, so the transmission shifter is now an electronic switch, which frees up more cabin space.

OS 8 also allows for more extensive personal user accounts ‘ ‘BMW ID’ –  which can save your preferences for seat and mirror positions, the nav system, driver assistance, display layout and menu, and more.

Equipment and pricing

As mentioned the car is due for launch in Singapore soon, so pricing is only an estimate but with higher COE prices and no Category A COE, we can expect the car to cost around S$200,000 with COE.

BMW has revealed its global standard-issue equipment – and that includes Singapore – for the car though, and it looks like the 218i will be very well-specced. All 2AT models come with the windscreen displays, navigation, two zone AC, iDrive, the 10.7-inch infotainment screen, automatic tailgate, park assist with rear view camera, reversing assistant, LED front and rear lights, and sport leather steering wheel.

In Germany, that equipment amounts to EUR3,000 in value, but the new car is priced only at EUR700 more than the old one. The takeaway is that we aren’t looking at a big price increase, COE notwithstanding – the 216i model was S$160k in August 2017 with a S$43k COE. So a S$200k 218i in 2022 with an S$80k Cat B COE seems decent value.
