BMW has given the 8 Series lineup a minor mid-life facelift, featuring mildly refreshed looks and improved infotainment and connectivity
MUNICH, GERMANY
BMW has announced a mild mid-life facelift for its 8 Series luxury coupe, with minor cosmetic changes and added equipment added across the range. The updated 8 Series lineup, which includes the Coupe, Convertible and four-door Gran Coupe, is expected to arrive in Singapore in the second quarter of 2022.
The most distinctive visual change is the grille, which feature a redesigned kidney bar design, as well as being Iconic Glow items, which means that they can be illuminated. The grille is flanked by adaptive LED headlamps, while BMW’s Laserlight system can be specified as option.
The other main change is that all 8 Series models now get the M Sport package as standard, which includes aerodynamically enhanced front and rear aprons. The front bumper air intake has been redesigned, while the rear diffuser insert is now finished in Dark Shadow metallic. The package is complemented by the M Sport brake system that comes with blue callipers.
The M850i xDrive variants also get the same wing mirrors as the high-performance M8 models, along with a front spoiler lip and an uprated brake system. The M850i xDrive Coupe in particular also gets a new rear spoiler. The additions to the M850i xDrive is also available as an optional M Sports Package Pro for the other 8 Series models.
In addition, the M850i xDrive can also be specified with an optional M Performance Package, which throws in black brake callipers, dark inserts in the lights, and a black rear spoiler for the coupe. There are also four new body colour choices for the update 8 Series; Skyscraper Grey, San Remo Green, M Portimao Blue and a BMW Individual colour, Frozen Tanzanite Blue.
The interior of the facelifted 8 Series is mostly unchanged, with the exception of an upgraded Live Cockpit Professional system that is now standard, and comes with a larger 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, up from 10.25-inches previously. The Live Cockpit Professional package includes BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant voice recognition system, a head-up display, wireless smartphone connectivity, and the BMW Maps online-based navigation system.
Other standard equipment on the updated 8 Series include Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant safety packages, which include features such as forward collision alert, lane change warning and lane departure warning, as well as reversing assist. Customers can also add on the Driving Assistant Professional as an option, which throws in active cruise control with Stop & Go, as well as steering and lane guidance assistance.
For the high performance M8 Competition, the changes are even more subtle, mostly restricted to the same redesigned grille as the regular 8 Series models, as well as new paint options like Brooklyn Grey metallic, Isle of Man Green metallic, and four Frozen paint schemes, namely Frozen Pure Grey metallic, Frozen Deep Grey metallic, Frozen Deep Green metallic and Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic. It also gets carbon fibre bucket seats, a slightly redesigned steering wheel, as well as the same infotainment upgrades as the regular 8 Series cars.
The drivetrains of the facelifted 8 Series remain unchanged, and for Singapore that means that it gets the 840i, with its 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six engine that produces 333hp and 550Nm of torque, as well as the M850i xDrive, which gets a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that churns out 530hp and 750Nm of torque. The M8 too gets the same 4.4-litre V8 as before, tuned to produce 625hp and 750Nm of torque.
The updated 8 Series is the first of several new cars that BMW will be introducing this year, and other vital models due for a refresh include the 2 Series Active Tourer, 3 Series, 7 Series and X1. The brand will also be bolstering its electrified offerings with cars like the i4 and i7 set to launch over the coming months.
