Last week, I volunteered in BMW Singapore’s Meals on Wheels community drive. Meals-On-Wheels (MOW) is a volunteer-driven programme committed to providing meals to homebound elderly under the TOUCH Home Care. The meals are packed and catered to their dietary needs which are then sorted into different bags for easier identification upon delivery.

Kim and I from CarBuyer were given a BMW 318i to assist us with the deliveries that day. We ended up hitting 16 different locations, delivering a total of 19 meals. Although the car only had 156 horsepower, it was actually more than adequate for an every-day-to-day drive. Apple CarPlay helped me conveniently connect my phone providing us easy access to music throughout the trip. We actually did put BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant to the test too, which was very responsive.

Upon reaching the homes, I noticed that majority of the elderly were living alone and that honestly broke my heart. Upon delivering the meals, I greeted each home with a simple “Hello Uncle”, or “Hello Aunty”, and was immediately replied with a smile from their faces. I can’t quite explain that sense of happiness and joy it brought me knowing I might have just made their day, or so, I hoped.

Overall, Meals on Wheels was a very humbling experience as it taught me to be grateful for what I have, as there will always be someone who would love to have your bad days. Like Mother Teresa once said, “kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”
