Japanese luxury brand Lexus will unveil its second EV, the RZ, and first to run on the new Toyota EV platform E-TNGA

Tokyo, Japan –

Lexus has teased more images of its second electric vehicle (EV), the RZ, ahead of a full reveal on April 20, 2022.

We already know what the RZ will look like thanks to Toyota’s earlier announcement on its mega-charge towards electric cars – read the full story here about its S$100bn investment and 15 planned EVs on the way.

The RZ was already previewed earlier – but Lexus didn’t name it outright at the time

The RZ will run on Toyota’s E-TNGA electric car platform, which also underpins the Toyota BZ4X, a small EV crossover/SUV that was announced last year. Because of that, we expect the car’s mechanicals/electricals to be largely the same as the BZ4X, with Toyota claiming a battery size of 71.4kWh and a range in excess of 450km, and up to 150kW DC fast charging.

Teaser images revealed today show that the car will have a yoke-style steering wheel, which will be good for Formula 1 fans. While unlikely, this could imply a quicker steering ratio so drivers don’t need to take their hands off the wheel.

The car also has a very driver-centric looking cockpit with a digital instrument display surrounded closely by key controls/features – it’s flanked by AC vents, and also includes a touchscreen angled toward the driver. The car will be fully revealed at an official annoucement on April 20, so stay tuned.

Toyota may be shifting to EVs but it’s not losing sight of one key aspect of ownership: Resale value

Like many EVs, the RZ will further muddy Lexus’ nomenclature: Obviously ‘R’ could be a reference to the RX SUV, one of Lexus’ bulwark models, but there’s also the RC coupe. And if Lexus ever decides to build an electric RX or NX sized car, what will it be called? RXZ? NXZ?
