Pepsi to be first company to receive deliveries on Tesla’s EV trucks

Tesla’s EV truck will finally make its first delivery this December after a three-year delay due to parts shortage

CALIFORNIA, USA

PepsiCo Inc confirmed on 7 October 2022 that it would take delivery of Tesla Inc’s Semi trucks on 1 December 2022, becoming the first company to receive its orders for the much-delayed electric vehicle.

PepsiCo said the trucks would be used at its Frito-Lay plant in Modesto, California, and its PepsiCo beverages factory in Sacramento. PepsiCo reserved 100 of Tesla’s trucks in 2017 and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk revealed earlier this month that deliveries of the long-range version of the Tesla Semi would begin by the end of 2022, some three years later than initially announced (and five years after the original concept was shown). Tesla has also just updated all the photos on the official Semi page, further hinting that the manufacturer is on course with its plan to deliver trucks this year.

Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce its Semi late on 7 October 2022 saying its EV truck offers 805 km of range and is “super fun to drive.” Musk initially said the trucks would be in production by 2019 but that timeline has been delayed by years due to parts shortages.

Tesla also says it is capable of hitting 0 to 100km/h in 20 seconds and that it can maintain the speed limit even up steep grades. According to Tesla, the truck can regain 70 per cent of its range in just 30 minutes when charging from its special ultra-rapid Tesla Semi Chargers (also known as Tesla Megachargers).

Other companies known to have made orders for Tesla’s Semi include United Parcel Service Inc (UPS), Walmart Canada, and food service distributor Sysco Corp.
