DC fast-charger in Johor the first step in a planned Singapore-to-Bangkok EV network that spans Malaysia

Johor, Malaysia – Porsche Asia Pacific and Shell have announced the start of operations of their high-performance charging (HPC) infrastructure EV network, with the first fast-charger location in Tangkak, Johor, Malaysia open.

The network aims to eventually connect EV drivers from Singapore to Bangkok. Porsche and Shell previously announced this network in March 2021, which will span the entire North-South Highway. Porsche Singapore also has plans for the largest manufacturer-branded charge network in Singapore.

Assuming you start your journey at Woodlands Checkpoint, Google Maps estimates the journey to Tangkak to be 184km – that’s roughly halfway to Kuala Lumpur. Eventually, the network aims to span across Malaysia’s North-South Highway with 12 charge points located at six Shell stations.

Amr Adel, Senior Vice President of Mobility at Shell outlined their goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, citing their plan to “improve the EV charging experience along a key travel artery connecting three countries in the region” with Porsche. That echoes Porsche Asia Pacific’s goal of turning its vision of “long-distance, cross-border emissions-free travel” to a reality.

These stations will see chargers that provide 180 kilowatt (kW) direct-current (DC) fast chargers. These are DC fast-chargers that can take some EVs to 80 percent in half an hour to an hour. Know nothing about EV charging? Our EV Dummies Guide has all the info.

With charging like this you can expect a car like the Porsche Taycan to go from zero to 80 percent in 30 minutes, providing up to 390km of range.

Given Singapore’s tiny size, it’s hard to truly test the range of your electric vehicle before you’re right back at your front door.
