Toyota’s CEO entered a hydrogen-powered Corolla in a 25 hour endurance race

Mr Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation participated in a 25 hour long endurance race held in Thailand over 17 and 18 December 2022, in a hydrogen-powered Toyota Corolla race car.

Known as the ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2 concept, the car did not participate throughout the entire 25 hours, but only in the first and last few hours of the race. The use of the hydrogen-powered vehicle marks the first time the technology has been used in a race outside Japan.

Mr Toyoda, who is also founder and team owner of Rookie Racing (sister team of Toyota Gazoo Racing), participated under the driver name ‘Morizo’, and was joined by Hao Quoc Tien, CEO of Asian region and other senior executives from Toyota.

Rookie Racing’s entry in the race also gave Toyota the opportunity to display and demonstrate its various clean technologies from hybrid vehicles to plug-in hybrids, full electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles.

Toyota’s first proper EV, the bZ4X proves it’s getting bZ.

This ties in to Toyota’s multiple pathway approach of offering customers various powertrains, giving them options of clean mobility suitable for each individual financial flexibility, daily needs, and energy and infrastructure readiness.

The hydrogen-powered Corolla, while in its early stages of development, represents Toyota’s pathway to cleaner mobility and its belief that diverse markets need diverse options for carbon neutrality.
