A car that’s lasted eight generations obviously does so for a reason and Volkswagen’s eighth-generation Golf proves that at every turn. And especially if you’re (relatively) new to driving and owning a car, it’s hard to go wrong with a hatchback like the Volkswagen Golf. 

Like a partner who listens to your needs, the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf comes in three different mild-hybrid trim variants. All are equipped with a 1.5-litre TSI turbocharged engine. With 148hp and 250Nm powering the front wheels and a seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), you’ll jump from 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds. Perfect for showing off to your Valentine’s date. Speaking of dates… mood lighting always guarantees brownie points and the ambient light customisation feature in the Volkswagen Golf 8 is stunning. With several moods and colours to choose from, this car is the best wingman you’ll ever need. The whole rainbow is available for customisation and there isn’t a mood you won’t be able to colour in with the Volkswagen Golf 8’s ambient lighting.

All this is controlled from the Digital Cockpit Pro – a 10.25” high resolution dash screen that has all the information you need before your eyes. The Volkswagen Golf 8 also provides smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available. No need to worry about cluttering your dashboard with a clunky phone holder to stick on your windscreen. 

If you’re worried about interior space, the new Volkswagen Golf 8 is all sleek and all spacious. In going digital, physical buttons are few and the instrument cluster is all on the Digital Cockpit Pro. The gear selector has also been minimised giving you much more space. The electrically adjusted sport seats in the Volkswagen Golf GTI also come with memory function.

On the outside you’ll find sleek, sharp, slim LED headlights. This is matched with a thin LED light strip above the grille on the R-Line model and GTI. Just for that extra razzle dazzle. And if that wasn’t enough, 1,237-litres of luggage space is more than enough for a picnic date. Or a trip to Ikea if you move that fast. And with the Golf, you probably will.
