Laying aside the nice shock of the performance, going electric is a good move for the XC40. Volvo’s ubiquitous 2.0-litre turbo engine was decent but not excellent, being rather thirsty and with an obvious diesel-like clatter.
Ditching that has made the XC40 a very refined car that’s nicer to drive than the PHEV and the gasoline model, which in a way is no surprise since even the Mercedes-Benz GLA isn’t as pleasant a drive as the Mercedes-EQ EQA.
On paper the XC40 is less efficient than the Polestar 2 – 25.1kWh/100km versus 20.9kWh/100km – perhaps because of the SUV body style.
That gives an on-paper range of 298km, using the LTA homologation figures, but in practice, the XC40 does better. Our 150km test drive mixed 50/50 highway and urban conditions and came in just under 20kWh/100km, which would give around 375km on a single charge. That’s excellent range performance for an EV in Singapore.
In the small, fully-electric SUV segment the XC40 has only one direct competitor – the Mercedes-EQ EQA. It’s equal in range terms, but charges slower, has less than half the horsepower, and it’s more expensive than the XC40. On paper, the Volvo wins – but not for nothing is Mercedes the top-selling luxury brand in Singapore. BMW’s bigger iX3 debuted at S$252k, but that’s when COEs were less expensive, though it’s still now the least expensive of the mid-size German EV SUVs, at S$280k.
On the face of it, the electric XC40 seems an expensive proposition, but we must remember that EV-fying a car changes its character completely. When you realise this is a Polestar 2 in an small SUV bodystyle, with considerable performance and equipment to offer, and a superior driving experience to the conventional car, it’s not so shocking.
