As the Australian state introduces fines for non-EVs in EV lots, should Singapore consider the same?
NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA
Australian state New South Wales has introduced fines of up to $2,200 AUD (approximately S$2,000) for ICE vehicles found parked in EV-only charging lots.
The new law states that ‘A driver of a vehicle that is not an electric powered vehicle must not stop in a parking area for electric-parking lots’. The maximum penalty would result in 20 units, equivalent to AUD$2,200 with one unit worth AUD$110.
The NSW law also states that ‘A driver must not stop in a parking area for the charging of electric-powered vehicles unless the electric-powered vehicle is plugged into an external source of electricity’.
As infrastructure develops globally to support the increased use of EVs, incidents of EV-only charging lots being taken up by non-EVs and irreverent owners who leave their cars there even when done charging are nothing new.
Take a quick scroll through Singaporean Facebook group Singapore EV Enthusiasts and you’ll find countless posts of perturbed owners sharing images of non-EVs and even actual EVs hogging these designated lots.
Most recently, an EV owner in Singapore was left frustrated after waiting over an hour at Century Square for a BYD e3 to vacate the lot despite the vehicle being fully charged.
The service provider in question, Charge+, revealed that an idle fee system will be implemented this year where owners will incur a time-based penalty after a grace period.
With approximately 3,000 charging points across Singapore and more on the horizon, could an idle fee from service providers deter misuse of EV-designated charging lots, or is government intervention needed to refine charging etiquette?
