Interior and Features
First things first, while the GR86 technically counts as a 2+2, the rear seats are really just token items at best. You could feasibly squeeze an adult back there, but the experience is going to be far from comfortable for anything other than a short journey.
The GR86 is thus best enjoyed solo, or maybe with a partner at a push. At least then there’s fewer people to gripe about what is arguably the GR86’s weak spot, namely interior quality. The cabin feels incredibly spartan, with lots of hard plastics and a sense of being put together rather cheaply, and there are some noticeable rattles evident while on the move.
It does bear keeping in mind though that overseas, the GR86 is meant to be an affordable entry-level coupe, and so some cost-cutting is understandable in that context. Whether that is acceptable to Singaporeans who have to pay over 200 grand for the same car though is a different story, but another way to look at is is that Toyota is steadfastly sticking to the car’s lightweight simplicity formula by forgoing some frills.
It’s not all basic though, and there is at least an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen display with (wired) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. There’s also a pretty remarkable list of driver assistance safety features, including cruise control, pre-collision alert and braking, lane departure alert, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beam and cornering headlights.
That said, given the driver-focused nature of the car, it’s probably unlikely that you’ll utilise those features in full very often. What’s probably more of interest is the digital driver’s instrument display, which incorporates neat info such as a G-force meter, power and torque curves, and even a digital stopwatch for timing your laps around a racetrack.
