Pricing, Competitors and Conclusion

Toyota lists the GR86 manual at S$138,888 without COE, and at today’s COE premiums, that means you’ll be paying over S$240,000 to put the car on the road here. Interestingly, the automatic version costs eight grand more, at S$146,888 without COE, so that’s another compelling reason to go for the manual.

Truthfully though, in Singapore at least, there are not many bona fide sports models you can have for that sort of money. The obvious one is of course the GR86’s twin, the Subaru BRZ, which should offer a near identical driving experience, just with a different badge. Aside from that, the other alternative is the Mini Cooper S, which is really more of a slightly hot hatchback than outright sports car, and delivers a different sort of driving proposition altogether.

So in some sense, the Toyota GR86 still remains as somewhat of performance bargain, albeit one that has to be put through the Singaporean perspective. A car like the GR86 is not something you buy for your daily commute here, although the improvements made over the previous model means that you can live it with reasonably well day-to-day.

Rather, the GR86 should be seen as a continuation of a motoring icon, sharpened and improved for today’s age. And it is an ideal that should be cherished, because as the automotive world moves towards electrification, chances are, the likes of a near fully-analogue sports car like the GR86 is likely to become a truly rarified species. It would be a real shame for driving enthusiasts everywhere once that day comes, but hopefully the GR86 can continue to keep the flame alive for at least one more generation.
