Volkswagen has given its ID.3 electric hatchback a mid-life update, with mild tweaks and upgraded software; no news on Singapore availability yet

WOLFSBURG, GERMANY

Volkswagen has given its ID.3 electric hatchback a mid-life update, which brings with it mild styling tweaks, slightly revamped interior and new software upgrades. The revised ID.3 will go on sale across Europe later this year, but there is still no news on the car’s availability for Singapore as yet.

Externally, the ID.3 gets slightly redesigned front bumpers that now incorporate vertical air ducts, which are said to aid with aerodynamic efficiency. The bonnet has also been reshaped to give the car a more natural and elongated look, but it also serves to improve the car’s drag coefficient. At the back, the taillights have also been revised with a new design to make them look more distinctive.

Inside, Volkswagen says that it has improved the quality of the materials used for the revised ID.3’s interior. Chiefly, it claims that the materials are now sustainable and animal-free, with most of them produced from recycled materials. The other major change inside is the central infotainment touchscreen, which has now been upsized to 12-inches from 10-inches previously.

The main changes though pertains to the car’s operating system software, and the ID.3 now runs on the latest version of Volkswagen’s ID software package, which comes with simplified menus for easier and smoother operation. The optional cloud-based speech recognition system has also been updated to be more responsive, while the head-up display now incorporates augmented reality functionality.

There are no major changes to the ID.3’s drivetrain, and it remains powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 204hp and 310Nm of torque. The base ID.3 Pro model gets a 59kWh battery that offers up to 426km of driving range, while the ID.3 Pro S model has a 77kWh battery that delivers up to 546km of range. The Pro S also gets a higher DC charging capacity of 170kW, allowing it to go from 5 to 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes.

While the ID.3 has not been officially confirmed for Singapore, Volkswagen revealed at the 2023 Singapore Motorshow that it is planning to introduce the ID.3’s bigger sibling, the ID.4, some time later this year, making it the first time that Volkswagen will have a mainstream full-fledged battery electric vehicle on sale in Singapore.
