BMW launched four new models at the 2024 Singapore Motorshow, including the new X2 and iX1, and high-performance variants of the i5 and X1
SINGAPORE
BMW unveiled four new models at the 2024 Singapore Motorshow, including the debut of the new second-generation X2 crossover, the first-ever electric iX1 SUV, and two new high-performance models in the form of the X1 M35i xDrive and the i5 M60 xDrive. We round up each of the four new BMWs that were unveiled at the show.
BMW X2
BMW is launching a full-on assault on COE Category A, and the X2 is one of two such cars introduced at the Motorshow that qualifies for the so-called mainstream COE category. Underneath its sporty skin lies the same drivetrain that underpins the regular X1 here in Singapore, which means it gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 122hp and 230Nm of torque.
Of course, the X2 comes in a sleeker body shape than the X1, but the car has also grown substantially over its predecessor, with a 194mm increase in length, and 21mm increase in width. It translates into more interior room overall for passengers, as well as a generous 560-litre boot that is even bigger than the X1’s, 20 litres more in fact.
BMW will offer just one variant of the X2 in Singapore for now, it being the sDrive16i M Sport. That means it comes generously-specced, with sports seats upholstered in Veganza vegan leather, a sports steering wheel, and M anthracite leather, along with wireless smartphone charging, and the usual wide double screen infotainment and driver information setup now seen on all new BMWs. Pricing starts at S$233,888 inclusive of COE.
BMW iX1
The iX1 marks a significant breakthrough for BMW here, as it’s not just the first-ever electric X1 model, but also BMW’s first ever electric Cat A model sold in Singapore. The car’s electric drivetrain has been specially tuned to produce a final output of 147hp, allowing it to meet the requirements to qualify for Cat A. This is in contrast to overseas versions of the iX1 eDrive20 (to give its specific model name) which produces 204hp, although torque remains the same at 250Nm.
In this iteration, the iX1 features a 64.8kWh battery that gives the car a WLTP-rated electric driving range of 474km on a full charge. The car can accept three-phase 22kW AC charging, which tops up the battery in 3 hours 45 minutes. Alternatively it can also take on 130kW DC fast charging, which will charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just under half an hour. Pricing starts from S$240,888 with COE for the iX1 eDrive20 xLine.
BMW X1 M35i xDrive
The other X1 variant launched at the 2024 Singapore Motorshow was the X1 M35i xDrive, which is also a first for the X1 model. The most powerful X1 ever features a twin-turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot powerplant that produces 300hp and 400Nm of torque, allowing it to go from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds.
Other M performance bits on the X1 M35i include an M Sport Boost function that gives the car a momentarily rapid burst of speed, adaptive M suspension, sports steering, a near-actuator wheel slip limiter, and an M Performance Aerodynamics package. The interior also gets M sports seats, and M-specific content on the infotainment screen and driver instrument display. The X1 M35i xDrive retails for S$335,888 inclusive of COE.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive
BMW also introduced another M performance model at the 2024 Singapore Motorshow, in the form of the i5 M60 xDrive. The car comes hot on the heels of the new 5 Series and i5 that was launched at the back end of 2023, and is the most powerful 5 Series variant available for now, at least until the new M5 arrives.
Power comes from two electric motors that combine to develop a total of 517hp, but can go up to a maximum of 601hp in Sport mode. The rear motor produces 340hp, and the front motor puts out 261hp, and torque is rated at 795Nm, or 820Nm when M Sport Boost or the M Launch Control function is activated. 0-100km/h comes up in a scant 3.8 seconds, while top speed is limited to 230km/h.
With its 81.2kWh battery, BMW claims that the i5 M60 xDrive is able to offer a WLTP-rated electric driving range of up to 516km, although that can be increased by 25 percent in Max Range mode, which limits the car’s power and speed and deactivates some comfort functions. The i5 M60 xDrive is priced at S$507,888 inclusive of COE.
