The 2016 World Driver’s Championship winner got a chance to ride shotgun in the Mercedes-Benz EQXX ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix
MONACO, EUROPE
At A Mercedes-Benz event ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, 2016 F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg had a chance to check out the EV prototype from Mercedes-Benz, the Vision EQXX that has an estimated range of 1,000km.
In a video shared on his YouTube page, the former F1 driver took viewers around the EQXX showcasing features that go into the performance of the car.
From its low and swoopy shape the EQXX has a Cd of 0.17 – meaning top notch aerodynamic performance.
Materials like magnesium, aluminium, and plenty of carbonfibre also go into reducing the weight of the EQXX, along with just a singular layer of paint on the outside, and a 495kg battery. In the rear, fibreglass rear springs also help reduce weight – a first in the Mercedes-EQ series so far.
While Rosberg was excited to get in the car, a Mercedes road test engineer stepped in to mention that he wasn’t allowed to drive the EQXX. Instead, he was allowed to sit shotgun while the same Mercedes engineer ferried them around.
On the interior, the EQXX has a screen spanning the entire dashboard, similar to the hyperscreen in the flagship EQS Sedan. The screen is in 8K with a mini LED Display and 3,000 dimming zones. This means that any part that isn’t illuminated does not consume any power.
When the former F1 driver questioned if air conditioning reduces range within the EQXX, co-driver Boris – a Mercedes road test engineer – shared that it makes use of a heat pump that takes in heat generated from the drive system and from its environment outside to cool the interior cabin.
The car previously completed a trip of 1,008km on a single charge driving from Sindelfingen, Germany, to Cassis, France. Travelling at 87km/h, the EQXX still had 15 percent left on the battery at the end of the trip, roughly equivalent to 140km more of range.
Mercedes says the EQXX is a concept/prototype for its new electric drivetrain technology, and while the EQXX itself may not become a full production model, the tech driving its wheels will power the next crop of Mercedes EVs.
