The limited edition 8 Series was designed by Koons and presented at Contemporary Istanbul 2022

ISTANBUL

Earlier in March, we first reported on American artist Jeff Koons’ collaboration with BMW to create THE 8 X JEFF KOONS, the brand’s most elaborately designed vehicle in its history.

Now in September at the 2022 edition of Contemporary Istanbul, a contemporary arts fair in Istanbul, the BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé was presented.

Hakan Tiftik, Chief Executive Officer for Borusan Otomotiv, distributor for BMW in Türkiye, shares that BMW has been a supporter of Borusan Group’s culture and art activities with its partnership and sponsorships in various art disciplines in Türkiye and across the globe.

In a press conference that Tiftik and Koons both participated in, Koons shared his excitement at being in Istanbul for the first time and talked about his collaboration with BMW on the M850i. “In the past, it was a great honour for me to be invited to design an Art Car for BMW. Seeing my Art Car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Race was truly an exciting moment,” he shares.

The BMW Art Car Project began in 1975 by French racecar driver Hervé Poulain who commissioned an artist to paint the first BMW Art Car. The most recent artist to join the ranks of artists like Jenny Holzer and Andy Warhol is Futura 2000 who designed for the BMW M2.

“When designing the BMW M850, I tried to create a sporty and luxury sedan model that represents the power and energy of the automobile,” Koons shared.

The BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé had a limited-edition production with only 99 units being made and each one taking over 200 hours of painting by hand.
