Research in America shows EV owners aren’t switching back to petrol

Study conducted on US vehicle registration data shows more owners are sticking to EVs

American news website Axios conducted a study on new vehicle registrations in the United States and data has shown that EV owners tend to stick to electric power when purchasing a new vehicle.

By tracking registration data from S&P Global Mobility, Axios found that 65.3 percent of households that already owned EVs and bought a new car in 2022 purchased another EV. This number is up from 48 percent in 2021.

While this pertains to our neighbours in the West, it isn’t too far off from Singapore. In comparison to 2021, the population of electric vehicles on our roads increased by 50 percent in the first half of 2022. Plug-in hybrids meanwhile saw an increase of 44.5 percent and petrol cars saw their overall population decrease by less than 1 percent.

While Tesla is selling like hotcakes in the United States, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have got their share of the pie on our homeground. BMW has even seen the numbers go down on its petrol cars in comparison to 2021, while its EVs like the iX3 and i4 have seen consistent over-subscription. Here’s our full analysis of the top car brands in the first half of 2022.

With EV ownership steadily increasing, the targets of Singapore’s 2030 Green Plan are not far off.
