The ID. 7 marks Volkswagen’s first electric model for the upper mid-size class, and will launch later this year.
WOLFSBURG, GERMANY
Volkswagen has premiered its first all-electric sedan, the ID. 7. At nearly five metres long and with a range of up to 700km (WLTP), the ID. 7 is planned for launch this year in Europe and China, and 2024 in North America.
The ID. 7 is the latest vehicle underpinned by the MEB platform, and comes equipped with 210kW of power. Different battery sizes within the car are able to be chosen, however, accommodating ranges of up to 700km (WLTP) and charging capacities of up to 200kW.
The car also features a drag coefficient strikingly close to that of Mercedes-EQ’s own long and luxurious electric sedan, the EQS. The ID. 7 clocks in at 0.23 thanks to a sloping roof in coupé style, while the EQS clocks in at 0.2, the lowest so far for its class of EV. The ID. 7 however falls just slightly shorter, coming in at nearly five metres while the EQS measures 5.2m.
On the interior, the ID. 7 also takes on a new concept, following feedback from its customers. The infotainment system enters the world of tablets-in-cars, with a 15 inch screen as standard. This is accompanied by a new air conditioning operating concept on the top level of the infotainment system, and a backlit touch slider. An augmented reality head-up display is also introduced as standard.
The panoramic sunroof is electronically dimmable by touch control and voice commands, and for the first time in a Volkswagen the front seats offer optional adaptive seat Climatronic. These come with cooling or heating as required, and a drying function. Massage functions are also available, coming with the seal of approval from the German Campaign for Healthier Backs (because Germany is that efficient).
A 700-watt Harmon Kardon sound system can also be found in the ID. 7 to compete with the BMW i7’s Bowers & Wilkins system. The sound system in the ID. 7 meanwhile comes equipped with 14 high-end loudspeakers, including a centre speaker at the front and a subwoofer in the luggage compartment.
The ID. 7 is part of Volkswagen’s aims to achieving 80-percent of the electric car share in Europe, along with the ID. Buzz Long Wheelbase expected this year as well. The brand is going all-in in an offensive on electric vehicles, with hopes that they will account for half of its sales by 2030.
The ID. 7 itself is aimed to launch this year in Europe and China, and from 2024 in North America. Plans for Singapore meanwhile, will be announced at a later date.
