The FL5-generation Honda Civic Type R completed the 20.8km circuit in just 7:44.881, making it the fastest FWD vehicle around “The Green Hell”.

The latest Honda Civic Type R reclaims the throne for being the fastest front-wheel Drive (FWD) vehicle to lap the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

Fitted with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tyres, the FL5-generation Civic Type R completed the 20.8km Nordschleife circuit in 7 minutes 44.881 seconds. You can watch the wince-inducing on-board footage of the lap record below.

Previously, the FL5 Civic Type R (CTR) also set the FWD track record at Suzuka’s 5.807km Grand Prix Circuit in 2 minutes 23.120 seconds. Strong accolades for Honda’s latest hot hatch.

2017 Honda Civic Type R sets new lap record at the Nürburgring — **The 2017 FK8 Honda Civic Type R**

Back in April 2017, the FK8 Civic Type R lapped the ‘Ring in 7:43:8, setting the FWD benchmark at the time. Ostensibly, that prior lap time appears quicker than the new Civic Type R’s lap.

However, our analysis of the FK8 CTR’s Nürburgring lap record footage shows that the starting and ending points are on opposite ends of the T13 straight (approximately 200m shorter than the current Nordschleife layout). The previous record-breaking car was also fitted with a roll cage and had its sound system and rear seats removed to compensate for the weight differential. Also, it was on a different set of unspecified ‘track-focused’ road tyres.

The FL5 CTR is based on the 11th generation Civic and it features the same K20C1 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot as the previous FK8 Civic Type R. However, power and torque figures have been bumped by 9hp and 20Nm thanks to a revised turbocharger and an improved exhaust system. So the new FL5 CTR produces 329 horsepower and 420Nm of torque.

Like the FK8 CTR – and prior generations of the Civic Type R, the FL5 CTR also uses a 6-speed manual gearbox with a lighter flywheel and a revised rev-matching system over the FK8’s transmission. The FL5’s wheelbase and track widths have also been widened, along with wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres.

Buyers can opt to have their FL5 Civic Type R fitted with Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tyres – like the record-breaking car, but we’ve had no word if that tyre set will be made available in Singapore.
