A wagon version of the new A4 adds a stylish player to a niche game
SINGAPORE – The wagon world has just gotten a little more stylish here, now that the new Audi A4 Avant is in town.
It’s gone on sale here with a price tag of $182,400 with COE for the 1.4 TFSI S tronic — decoded, those numbers and letters indicate a 140hp 1.4-litre turbo, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed twin clutch auto. That’s $14,400 more than the equivalent A4 sedan.
Meanwhile, go-faster types have a 2.0-litre quattro (or all-wheel drive) model with 252hp to think about, assuming they have $245,600 knocking around.
The A4 Avant has two immediate rivals. Mercedes sells a C 200 Estate here while Volkswagen’s Passat Variant R-Line 2.0 TSI is probably the new Audi’s stiffest competitor.

It costs $191,900 with COE, making it $9,500 more expensive than the cheaper of the two A4 Avants. But it’s 57 percent more powerful (with 220 hp) and, perhaps more to the point, it can carry more stuff.
The Audi offers 505 litres of cargo capacity with the rear seats up and 1,510 litres when they’re folded, against the Passat’s 650 litres and 1,780 litres.
That said, the Audi is probably pitched at the sort of buyer who wants a wagon more because he fancies something different than because he needs a true load-lugger. In all likelihood the A4 Avant, like its rivals, is destined to be something of a rarity. These cars may be relatively large, but the market for them here isn’t.
