SINGAPORE — Borneo Motors will get the Toyota C-HR, meaning the funky compact crossover will be an official Toyota model for Singapore.
No announcement has been made but the company has invited the local press to an unveiling of “the latest additions to its SUV line-up” at the Singapore Motor Show in January.
Insiders are keeping mum about which version of the C-HR is coming (or if the car is coming at all, just to be coy), but Toyota produces two models: a 1.2-litre petrol turbo and 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid.
The latter would basically be a sexy Toyota Prius on stilts, given that both cars are built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform.
As for the 1.2-litre turbo, its 116 horsepower engine would qualify it for a cheaper Category A COE. Both models have a continuously variable transmission.
In Japan, the two are remarkably close in price, but a CEVS rebate for the Hybrid could make it the cheaper model in Singapore.
Which of these will be sold here (or perhaps both will be?) will presumably be revealed at the Motor Show, but the C-HR in general is expected to be a strong seller, thanks mostly to its sharp looks.
It rivals Honda’s HR-V (also sold here as the parallel-imported Vezel), which is believed to have been the single best-selling model in Singapore in 2016.
That said, the Toyota is 66mm longer than the HR-V, with 30mm more in the wheelbase, which should make for more cabin legroom, especially in the back.
Here are the car’s main dimensions:
The C-HR’s name comes from an abbreviation of “Compact High Rider” or “Cross Hatch Runabout”. That effectively gives it two names, but when it’s launched here next year, Toyota’s Motor Show offering will basically have one mission.
