Singapore –
Porsche’s always had a dizzying array of model choices, and Singapore received another two with the launch of the Boxster and Cayman GTS models here on October 29.
Just as there’s the Turbo treatment (add tonnes of power and all-wheel drive), the
the GTS treatment (add power, sportiness and rear-wheel drive) has previously been reserved for larger, more expensive Porsches. But times are changing, which is why the GTS models of the Boxster and Cayman, traditionally the ‘babies’ of the Porsche range, are the very first to come into existence.
Externally the GTS models are identifiable by smoked headlamps (bi-xenon units), piano black window trim, the GTS badge and 20-inch ‘Carrera S’ alloy wheels.
Both GTS models are range toppers of their respective nameplates and both have the identical 3.4-litre flat six engines as found in the S models, but with 15bhp and 10Nm more, a total of 330bhp for the Boxster and 340bhp for the Cayman, respectively.
The ‘S’ in GTS stands for ‘Sport’, which is why both cars get extensive equipment to help drivers enjoy corners more: PASM (electronically-controlled active suspension) and Porsche’s Sport Chrono package, which integrates a lap timer along with more aggressive setting (Sport Plus) for the drivetrain and chassis via PASM. Also standard is a Sports Exhaust System. In contrast to the base or even S models, these lashings are cost optional.
Thankfully, for keen drivers, Porsche has left the dual-clutch PDK transmission as an option as well, as a manual transmission fits well with the ethos the GTS models reflect.
With the extra power and equipment, the Cayman GTS (with PDK) achieves 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds, with the Boxster GTS 0.1 seconds slower. Top speed is 283km/h and 279km/h respectively, with fuel consumption the same for both cars at 8.2L/100km. This makes each GTS model 0.4 and 0.3 seconds quicker than its S model equivalent, respectively.
The Boxster GTS retails for $333,988 and the Cayman GTS for $356,688, both prices without COE.
