Singapore’s first ‘official’ electric vehicle (EV) charging network points setup in HDB carparks setup in Jurong West, Yishun Avenue 9, Punggol Central and URA Centre at Maxwell Road

SINGAPORE – The Lion City’s initial batch of electric vehicle (EV) chargers that will eventually become the official public charging network here have been setup.

The news was announced on a post on the Facebook page of the current Transport Minister, Mr S. Iswaran, which revealed that chargers have been setup at HDB carparks in Jurong West, Yishun Avenue 9, Punggol Central and URA Centre at Maxwell Road.

While the chargers are not currently operational, Mr Iswaran said in the post that ‘These charging points will progressively become available for public use in the coming weeks.’

His post also added that for the rest of 2022, ‘more than 600′ charging points’ will be built at over 200 carparks by the end of 2022.

This is significant because this is the first ‘official’ charge network setup in Singapore, backed by the LTA (Land Transport Authority) and URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority). While existing charge networks exist – such as those belonging to Shell/Greenlots, and the SP Group – this is the first concrete step in the execution of Singapore’s biggest and official charging network.

As the press release also states, these chargers will be found in public places, ‘locations such as public housing and industrial estates, public parks, community centres and the Central Business District over the next 12 months.’

While there is no official statement on the type of chargers built, from the photos it looks like there are both DC 100kW fast chargers and regular AC 7.4 – 11.3kW chargers. The former will charge a Tesla Model 3 to 80 percent in around 40 minutes, while the latter will take around nine hours for a full charge.

The tender for public charge points under the Singapore Green Plan 2030 has been awarded to Comfort DelGro / Engie for the Central, East, and West of Singapore, while the North and North-East regions are under ‘Primech A&P Pte Ltd and its consortium partners – Charge+ Pte Ltd, Sunseap Group Pte Ltd, and Oyika Pte Ltd’ according the official statements.

Under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the island aims to have 60,000 charge points for its EV infrastructure by the end of the decade. As CarBuyer reported late last year, Mr Iswarana said that the planned 60,000 charge points for public carparks would come earlier in the decade rather than sooner, and it certainly seems to be on track.
