Great Scott! DeLorean teases new luxury EV set to launch in the later part of 2022 but it’s unlikely we’ll see it in Singapore.

SINGAPORE

On February 14 2022, the Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) released a teaser on its social media accounts featuring the silhouette of the iconic DMC-12, and its gull-wing doors swung up.

DMC’s tweet was accompanied by hashtags like #DeLoreanEVolved and #ElectricVehicle, and strongly suggests that DeLorean Motor Company will premiere a new electric vehicle later this year.

The same teaser was also shared on Italdesign’s Twitter feed in a post celebrating its 54th birthday, suggesting the design company may also be creatively involved in this endeavour.

Italdesign was founded in 1967 by Giorgetto Giugaro, who was also responsible for the design of the iconic DMC-12 sports car.

The original DeLorean Motor Company was founded in 1975 and the only car it produced was the DMC-12 that had a 2.85L V6 engine with 130hp, and 207Nm of torque. The car achieved its iconic status after being featured as the time machine in the Back To The Future film series throughout the 1980s.

1982 DeLorean doors swung up back to the future

In 1982 the company went bankrupt after founder John DeLorean’s activities in drug trafficking. The current DeLorean Motor Company behind the EV teaser was founded in 1995 by Stephen Wynne in Humble, Texas, who acquired the remaining inventory and now offers repairs and rebuilds to existing DeLorean owners.

With no official dealership for the brand in Singapore and a low likelihood of a right-hand drive version for now, it’s unlikely that we here in Singapore will be seeing the DeLorean EV coming through.

It wouldn’t even be the first time an Italdesign-penned sports car avoids Singapore, but we’re excited nonetheless for the DeLorean to actually go to the future this time.
