Fire on the Felicity Ace rages on as lithium-ion batteries in EVs aboard the ship fuel the fire

SINGAPORE

MOL Ship Management (Singapore), manager of cargo ship the Felicity Ace confirmed on 17 February 2022 confirmed that it had caught fire on its passage from Germany to USA. The cargo ship carrying more than 4,000 cars caught fire off the coast of Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. While its crew of 22 have abandoned ship and been safely rescued thanks to the Resilient Warrior, the fire rages on as cars from Porsche and Bentley, among others, are left onboard.

The cause of the fire is unknown except that it broke out in the ship’s cargo hold. Brands like Porsche, Bentley, Volkswagen, and Audi are known to have vehicles aboard. Bentley has confirmed a total of 189 of its vehicles aboard the ship, while Porsche has about 1,100 vehicles. In a post shared by Greek shipping magazine Naftika Chronika on their Facebook page, the Felicity Ace can be seen burning away in the distance.

The Felicity Ace’s ship operator, MOL Ship Management (Singapore) has confirmed the vessel’s stability and that there is no oil leakage from it. However due to the presence of electric vehicles on the ship, lithium-ion batteries within the cars onboard have also caught on fire. According to the local port officials, lithium-ion battery fires require special equipment to be extinguished and are “keeping the fire alive”.

According to the website set up to provide updates, two large tugs from Gibraltar have arrived on the scene to put out the fire and salvage what they can. Customers who were awaiting the arrival of their new purchases have also been notified by their dealers.
