Revealed: Mini's plans for 2014

Be prepared for a slew of new MINI models to grace the funky MINI Habitat showroom along Leng Kee Road over the next few months, as the brand is looking to expand its line-up to broaden its appeal even further.

The iconic British marque hosted a customer launch event at Zouk this past weekend, on 7 and 8 June, to introduce the all-new third-generation MINI Cooper and Cooper S models to the public. And according to a brand representative, it won't be the last we see of MINI this year yet.

For instance, whilst the current new-generation MINIs are only available with Cat B COEs (the 1.5-litre MINI Cooper produces 136bhp, which just about bumps it out of Cat A), the brand won't be missing from the Cat A market for long. Our rep tells us that the new MINI One, which features a 1.2-litre three-cylinder with 105bhp, is just 'weeks away' from local launch. Given the Cooper's already competitive pricing with a Cat B COE (it currently retails for $145,300, including COE), one can imagine that the One would probably offer a lot of car for not a lot of money.

More interestingly, MINI are also considering plans to bring in their first ever diesel variant, and the version most likely to be offered might be the Cooper D, which boasts of 1.5-litre turbo diesel with 116bhp, giving MINI buyers another option in Cat A.

Further down the road, you can expect LCI (Life Cycle Improvement, or MINI-speak for facelift) versions of the Countryman and Paceman over the next couple of months. Changes are expected to be minor, mostly restricted to a redesigned grille and new trim and colour options, but they serve to refresh two of MINI's flagship models to keep them up to date with the rest of the range.

Longer term, one can expect what could possibly be MINI's most important car yet, the MINI 5 Door. Basically a MINI hatch with two extra doors and a bit more room, the car should arrive here by the end of this year, and if MINI continues their strategy of pricing their cars aggressively, you can expect the MINI 5 Door to be a major competitor against the likes of the Volkswagen Golf.

And the brand will probably go from strength to strength next year too, with an all-new Clubman model set to be unveiled at this September's Paris Motor Show, and serving as a de facto estate variant for the MINI line-up. The new MINI Convertible shouldn't be far along as well, and expect to see both models here sometime next year.

It certainly sounds like exciting times for MINI ahead, but if you still want more, how about building one yourself? Or commissioning someone else to design a unique one for you?
