When we first caught a glimpse of this hover-like craft, we thought we had made contact with an extraterrestrial from the planet Mars. There seemed to be no wheels, just a set of glimmering anti-gravity generators. “Wait, that actually looks like a car.” a colleague remarked jokingly, as it pulled up.

Passion is truly an amazing river of determination and energy and this MK6 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a prime example of Syful’s passion towards automotive styling. Interestingly, Syful is also a member of the Static Fitment Crew Singapore, which REV had duly covered in our previous issue of Car Club. This Golf GTI is living proof that a true-blooded stance machine can exist here in Singapore, amidst the broken chaos of concrete and badly paved roads.

It all started with web-surfing automotive-styling pages and a timely encounter with an Audi A4 wagon and the rest soon became history. Initially apprehensive about taking the Golf GTI’s styling this far, Syful’s Volkswagen was just like any other ordinary gearhead’s GTI at first. “I used to pack a list of powerupgrades, such as Stage-ups and exhaust systems, but I got tired of the constant crave and chase for more power, it didn’t seem realistic anymore.

Besides, this is my daily drive and I wouldn’t want to risk any issues with the authorities.” The thought of consequences and problems that might occur from the quest for more power eventually evolved into this; a jaw-dropping, awe-striking stance form that could be one of the most unique forms of the German hatchback ever, here in Singapore.Even though the engine compartment looks pretty stock, a BMC air filter was stuck in to give the GTI better breathing capacity at mid-high RPM ranges. This was then balanced out with a set of Bastuck quad exhaust pipes for some aural pleasure.

The vehicle is then chipped to a simple Stage 1 to optimise both intake and exhaust tunes.The GTI derives its extreme, squat look from a set KW Clubsport UltraLow Edition coilover from gepfeffert.com with matching KW top mount camber plates to boot. Mixing into the suspension equation, a set of SuperPro roll-control ball joints was added, alongside 034 motorsports rear camber kits that provide some insane offset for that flat-out look.

The results; 3.2 degrees of negativity up front and an eye-popping 6 degrees of negative camber in the rear. Sheer insanity.Do not assume for a moment that Syful’s Golf GTI has no stopping power to speak of; a set of premium CP5200 model large brakes from AP Racing find home in the front wheels of his “Stancemobile”. Then there’s the nifty parts that automotive-styling folks would drool about; a set of rare (possibly one-off) 19” Rotiform IND rims with insane widths of 9.5jj all round and offsets of 32 up front and 8 in the rear. Of course, these rims had to wear rubber and the choice were Kumho Ecsta KU31s in the sizes of 225/35, pulled and stretched on these wide Rotiforms for maximum stance effect.

Interestingly, REV was told that the setup did not involve a single wheel spacer at all. Fitment was kept flush, purely with the use of great rim offset, appropriate tyre dimensions, suspension settings together with the right amount of camber. To keep the wheels tucked in as squarely as possible, customisation had to be done to all four fenders. This was neatly rolled and flared outwards with great care so as not to damage the fenders. The exterior was kept to a minimal, adhering to Syful’s principles that a good looking ride does not necessarily equate to more aftermarket parts. “I deliberately kept the exterior void of unnecessary modifications to direct attention to the more significant parts.” commented Syful.

The roof supplements, originals from Volkswagen; a roof rack and an accompanying roofbox are about the only exceptions that give Syful’s Golf GTI its special character. As a sporty individual who loves the recreational activities with his family on the weekends, Syful’s Golf GTI’s is faithfully dubbed the ‘VeeDub’, the family’s mobile around the roads of Singapore. Leaving it in the hands of his wife, Syful has no apprehensions about it.

“She knows my passion for automotive styling and takes good care of it as well, because I love how it takes good care of my family as well, no matter the transformations I put it through.” However as of the moment, there are already plans that are about to be put into motion to transform the vehicle once again.
