Troung Hai Auto Corporation, also known as THACO, is BMW Group’s newest series production partner as the brand continues on its path to reduce carbon emissions and be a fully sustainable automaker. THACO (which is not to be mistaken as THAC0, an old rule from the Dungeons & Dragons rulebook) will assemble BMW X3, X5, 3 Series, and 5 Series cars for the Vietnamese market.

This isn’t really the first of such local productions for BMW, as the all-electric BMW iX3 is famously made in China, and there are BMW Group Plants in India and Thailand, plus what it calls partner plants in Malaysia and Indonesia as well.

All included, the BMW Group’s production network comprises over 30 locations around the globe. BMW assures that standardised processes and structures across the production system are in place to ensure consistent quality.

Many luxury brands are diversifying their assembly plants, and even Porsche has since started assembling its cars in Malaysia since last year.

BMW states that with Vietnam being a fast-growing region for the brand, it made sense to assemble cars there because as already demonstrated with the brand’s other factories, it dramatically cuts down on transport-related CO2 emissions that come with shipping entire cars halfway around the world.

“It has been nearly five years since we relaunched the BMW brand in Vietnam and brought THACO on board as the official importer of BMW vehicles in the market. We have cultivated a strong relationship with the THACO team during this time, and their experience and commitment to growing the brand is evident,” stated Lars Nielsen, the managing director of BMW Group Asia.

According to Mr. Trần Bá Dương, the chairman of THACO, the Vietnamese company has more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, building and trading everything from passenger cars to trucks for THACO and a variety of global brands. The BMW assembly operation will be housed in Chu Lai, Quang Nam Province, in central Vietnam.

BMW Group Asia has noted that the Vietnam-assembled cars are currently only for sale in Vietnam, and there are no plans to export them for sale in the region just yet.
