Meet the nominees of the Best Family Car Award for CarBuyer Singapore’s Car Of The Year

CarBuyer Singapore’s very first Car Of The Year awards, chooses the best of motoring from 2022, and these are your nominees for the Best Family Car Award.

Is it safe, practical, user-friendly and economical to run? This award is for the workhorse cars that serve the everyday needs of the Singaporean family, and serve them best.

Kia Sorento Hybrid

Some might baulk at paying more than S$200k for a Korean car, but the Sorento can do almost everything a luxury SUV can for almost half the price.

We’ve always known that hybrids are the bridge between the ICE and the Electric Eras, and the Kia Sorento proves it by being a worthy hybrid haven for cleaner family motoring. 

Kimberley says: He ain’t heavy, he’s my hybrid! Seven seats, all the safety assist systems you could need, the Sorento Hybrid is a worthy competitor in the age of rising fuel prices.

Honda HR-V

Still a very competent all-rounder as a family car, the previous-generation HR-V in all forms was an exceptionally strong seller in Singapore, but the driving landscape has changed since then. Rising petrol prices, the push towards electrification, and reduced COE quotas have really put pressure on the middle class buying public, which the HR-V is targeted right at.

Lionel says: More than just a basic appliance car, with great refinement and an easy drive. However local specification HR-V models could do with more standard equipment.

Nissan Qashqai

Nissan’s mainstream crossover SUV is more expensive, but also more capable as it goes upmarket in Singapore. More techy and with a properly classy interior, the Qashqai has definitely gone up a level and is now a step above its old competitors.

Lionel says: Highly competent and much better than the previous-generation car, it’s a great car for a growing family, but the lack of a hybrid powertrain means it is less efficient on fuel than some others.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

The appeal of the Toyota badge remains strong, and given the brand’s expertise in hybrid technology, the one thing you can be assured of getting out of the RAV4 Hybrid is dependability. And judging by the rate at which Toyota is rolling out hybrid models, that reputation is only going to grow even further in the years ahead.

Ben says: The RAV4 has always been a popular choice as a family SUV, and the hybrid drivetrain only serves to bolster its appeal even further. Proven Toyota tech means that real world efficiency can be truly achieved without compromises.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen’s cool urban SUV gets the midlife facelift it needs to keep pace with the competition in Singapore. Smartly understated, but spacious and a solidly good drive, though the lack of hybrid powertrains could blunt local interest.

Ben says: Volkswagen’s updated Tiguan encapsulates everything that’s good about the brand. Solidly-built, well-equipped and nice to drive, the Tiguan makes for an excellent choice for those looking for a well-rounded family SUV.
