A one-off SG50 Ghost Series II has been built. It’s the first time Rolls-Royce is celebrating a country’s anniversary, ever.
SINGAPORE — Owning a Rolls-Royce may say many things about you, but one special edition of the Ghost Series II will let its owner broadcast his love for the country.
The maker of arguably the finest cars in the world has just released an SG50 edition of the Ghost Series II, the smaller of the two limousines in its product family.
It marks the first time that Rolls-Royce has ever commissioned a car to celebrate the anniversary of a country.
The SG50 Ghost is painted in English White with a coachline in Consort Red, to represent the colours of the Singapore Flag. Rolls-Royce says it took a week to drape the car in five layers of paint.
The red coachline includes a Merlion logo, hand-painted with a squirrelhair brush.
Each headrest in the car is also emblazoned with a stitched Merlion, and there are treadplates that feature a drawing of the Singapore skyline with the words “Hand Built in Goodwood, England for Singapore’s 50th Anniversary”.
This won’t be the first time an upscale carmaker has paid tribute to the Singapore car market. Lamborghini issued a “Singapore Limited Edition” version of the Gallardo to mark the tenth anniversary of the company’s presence here in 2011, also colouring it white and red in accordance with the nation’s flag.
10 of those were made and sold, and similar tribute editions of the Gallardo were made for Malaysia and Hong Kong.
British supercar maker McLaren created three units of a Singapore Edition model of its MP4-12C in 2012. It featured Rocket Red stripes in places, and came with a special plaque.
Rolls-Royce is only building one example of the SG50 car and is still looking for a buyer for it. A spokesman said there are a number of “interested parties” and declined to name a price for the SG50 Ghost, but a seven-figure sum seems likely. But hey, what price patriotism?
Meanwhile, here are more pics of the one-off Ghost’s creation process.
