Honda Civic Type R takes the new Nurburgring FWD production lap record

Nurburgring Nordschleife, Germany – On April 24th, Honda announced that the new Civic Type R high-performance hatchback broke the lap record for its class, production front-wheel drive vehicles, on the famous racetrack.

On a lap run dated April 03, the development version of the Civic Type R posted a lap time of 7:43.8, outdoing the previous record holder, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport, with its lap time of 7:47.2, which was set in December 2016. The Type R beats its predecessor model by a whole seven seconds.

Honda says the car that set the record was very close to production spec. It had a full roll cage (for safety), the weight of which was compensated by removing the stereo and the rear seats and the tyres used were ‘road-legal track focused tyres’ although no brand was specified.

It’s easy to see why the Type R performed as it did, beating out many previous record holders such as the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy and original Nissan GT-R R35. The car has been comprehensively improved, with a totally new technical basis from the 2.0-litre 320bhp turbo engine, to the stiffer, lighter chassis and optimised aerodynamics.

Ryuichi Kijima, chassis engineer for the Type R, was quoted: “The cornering speed achieved in the new Type R is higher because the car features a wider track and tyres, a longer wheelbase, new multi-link suspension in the rear and optimised aerodynamics that improves stability.”

“For example, drivers typically enter the corner after Metzgesfeld at around 150 km/h. Even at this medium-speed corner, the speed is around 10 km/h higher due to the new Type R’s excellent stability. So, with improved cornering performance, we can increase the speed throughout the lap, helping the new Type R to achieve a much quicker lap time,” he said.

Built in Swindon, UK, the new model is the first Type R to see a global release in Europe, USA and Japan. As earlier reported on CarBuyer.com.sg, the new Honda Civic Type R is scheduled for a Singapore release in 2017 along with a 1.0-litre version of the Civic.
