After two decades and over 100,000 engines built, Bentley says goodbye to the handbuilt W12

SINGAPORE

With more than 100,000 engines built, over a span of two decades, Bentley pulls the plug on their storied handbuilt W12 engine. Bentley’s decision to do so is in-line with the Beyond100 strategy, which will see the carmaker become a global leader in sustainable luxury mobility.

“The W12 has played such an important role in the history of Bentley that it was only right for us to celebrate the engine’s retirement with those linked to this powerplant. The engine’s introduction helped change the face of the company almost overnight and so will go down in history as a true game changer and we should feel very proud to have designed, developed and manufactured such an icon in Britain for such a long period of time.” Said Andreas Lehe, Member of the Board for Manufacturing at Bentley Motors.

The 6-0-litre twin-turbocharged W12’s unique layout, which involves two narrow-angle V6 engines, sharing a common crank, is around 24-percent shorter than a conventional V12. This would mean that the overall packaging over a car’s footprint would be further optimised. In its second generation the W12 gained fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology, where one six-cylinder bank could be shut down under lighter loads.

To celebrate the W12, Bentley announced a limited run ‘Speed Edition 12’ series, that include Bentayga, Continental GT, Continental GT Convertible and Flying Spur models. These cars receive ‘Edition 12’ badging, treadplates, seat embroidery, fascia inlays, and numbered engine plaque. Owners will also be presented with a scale model of the W12 engine block.

Betley says that the petrol-electric V8 which replaces the W12, will produce the highest power offered in any of their cars, and will be available in every model in the Bentley range.
