The sporty Italian motorcycles will soon be sold alongside Bentleys and Aston Martins
SINGAPORE — Italian motorcycle brand Ducati is off to a new dealership. Wearnes Automotive has signed a letter of intent with the premium bike maker that says it will start importing and distributing the brand’s range here on July 1st.
Wearnes, which sells BMW motorcycles in Malaysia, will open a showroom at its current multi-brand premises at 45, Leng Kee Road.
It will house bikes there in a temporary set-up while the new showroom is being renovated, which means Ducatis will be displayed in the same building as the company’s premium car brands: Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Infiniti, Jaguar, and Land Rover.
The bike brand’s permanent showroom is expected to open in October.
Ducati is moving from Ducatisti SG, an independent outfit backed by Apichat Leenutaphong, a businessman who is the brand’s sole distributor in Thailand.
It is the second time this year that an Italian brand is moving from an independent representative to a large, multi-brand group after the Komoco group opened its new showroom for Italian sportscar brand Maserati.
Marco Biondi, the regional director in Asia for Ducati, expressed his thanks to Mr Apichat in a statement, and said he was “delighted” by the chance to work with Wearnes.
Wearnes chief executive Andre Roy said that Ducati complements the company’s luxury car portfolio.
It is the company’s first motorcycle venture in Singapore, but Ducati is likely to be a small contributor to revenue. In the first four months of the year, 20 Ducatis were registered in Singapore, versus 21 Bentleys.
Overall, the premium bike business is a relatively small one here, with 88 BMWs and 54 Harleys registered in the first four months of 2017, against 2,810 total motorcycle registrations.
Nevertheless, Wearnes sees a growth story here. “We are excited by the potential we see in Ducati,” said Mr Roy.
An earlier version of this article stated wrongly that Wearnes retails Ducati motorcycles in Malaysia. Sorry for the error.
