Esso promises deeper engine clean with new fuels

Haven’t tried Esso? Its new fuels allow you to make a clean go of it
SINGAPORE — Esso stations are serving up a new menu of fuels designed to improve engine performance. The reformulated petrols go on sale today, along with new names for each grade.
Esso will continue to use “Synergy” as the family name for its fuels, but will use “Synergy Regular” and “Synergy Extra” (in place of “Syn 2000” and “Syn 5000”) for its 92 and 95 Octane petrol, respectively.
The RON98 grade will be called “Synergy Supreme+“, a name chosen to reflect how the petrol helps give a deeper engine clean, says Esso. Cleaner engines offer better performance than those whose internals have been fouled by deposits.
CarBuyer understands that the new petrols were created by increasing the concentration of the additives mixed in by Esso. The Supreme+ petrol contains twice as much of the cleansing agents as the Synergy Regular grade. The new recipes add nothing to pump prices.
Motorists here are the first in the world to try the new petrol formulation, which wil in prices at the pump. To go with the new fuels, Esso has also upgraded its stations across the island.
Petrols sold at the pumps are generally made from a wholesale gasoline product, but each brand formulates its own additive package to differentiate its fuels from those of competitors.
Some additives are available over-the-counter and can be added separately. Caltex bottles its Techron additive, for instance, and sells it to drivers. Adding one bottle to a tank results in an additive concentration about 10 times greater than in petrol from the pumps, the company says.
We’ve tested Techron on the dyno (watch the clip below) with commendable results, but results from other additives will vary.
Nevertheless, petrol retail is a zero-sum game — there are only so many drivers here, after all — so Esso’s decision to reformulate its fuel is all about stealing customers by fighting clean.
