Looking to install a charging unit for your electric vehicle or EV delivery fleet? Singapore-based Interwell has the very smart Wallbox to do just that
SINGAPORE
Electric vehicles are quickly rising to become a major force in Singaporean motoring. They are efficient, quiet, and in the case of electric fleets of delivery vehicles, also very cost-effective with energy.
The big question for many that are still hesitant about jumping in though, is charging. Where can you safely and confidently charge your vehicle? How do you install an EV charger at home, and how can fleet managers effectively manage the charging of many small commercial vehicles at once?
Donovan Tan, the head of business development at the Interwell Group has the answers to these questions. The Interwell Group is an energy solutions provider in Singapore that went into the EV charging industry in 2016. It’s one of the pioneering installers of commercial EV charging tech in the country, and the company’s expertise has been used to set up many charging stations in Singapore for home and commercial applications.
In Singapore, Interwell is the exclusive distributor for Wallbox, a leading EV charging solutions systems provider from Spain. The Wallbox Commander 2 system is its present headlining charging station, which can be installed in both commercial and residential applications.
“EV charging systems must be tested and installed by qualified and licensed electricians,” explains Donovan. “There is a checklist that needs to be run through to ensure that everything is properly sorted before they can endorse the installation, and prior to this, they also need to access the power draw at the facility to ensure that it can deliver the loads required.”
Donovan tells us that the Wallbox Commander 2 is a three-phase, 22kW AC charger. It is also capable of delivering a single phase charge to EVs that do not need high capacity charging, such as with plug-in hybrids that have smaller battery capacities.
However it’s also worth noting that right now, not all electric vehicles can manage the maximum 22kW charge input, and the cars will have their own internal battery management systems that may step down the input to 11kW or 16kW. This would require a few hours to achieve a full charge but also enable the user to get maximum usable lifespan out of the batteries in the car.
The Wallbox Commander 2 functions extremely well as a smart, home-based EV charger if you have your own garage to park your vehicle. A full-colour, high definition touch screen lets the user program functions like scheduling the charging time, which can handily be set to take place during off-peak hours when electricity is slightly cheaper.
The screen displays all the information you need to know how quickly the charger is operating and how long it will take to complete the job, plus nuggets of data like how much electricity has already been dispensed.
It stores the information in its memory banks so as the user, you know how much power you’ve been using, which is also a great resource for accounting of fleet delivery vehicles, since the device can do cost tabulation for you as well.
It’s a smart charger with a compatible smartphone app — myWallbox, which lets you remotely connect to and preset the unit for use. The phone app is designed to be used quickly and easily, so there’s no steep learning curve to manage. Not only does this on-the-fly remote setup benefit home users, it lets fleet managers quickly and easily see which of their vehicles are charging, and know how much power is being used on a daily basis.
As a cutting-edge tech device, the Wallbox Commander 2 works with all major smart home devices like Alexa and Google Home. Once paired up, you can control the charging schedule with voice commands.
Electric vehicles are not only here to stay, but will soon become the energy-efficient mainstream mode of transportation the same way LEDs have come to take over from incandescent light bulbs.
