Singapore – Mercedes-Benz has announced sales and pricing of the new CLS four-door coupe here.
The CLS 400 retails for $370,888 with COE, while the CLS 400 Shooting Brake, a station wagon version, sells for $375,888 with COE.
The four-door coupe (which actually has four doors and a hatch back) gets its mid-life facelift with a reworked front end. First appearing in 2001, the CLS is the car that started the four-door coupe craze, most recently seen in the form of its very popular younger brother, the CLA.
The grille and air intakes now resemble newer Mercedes models (like the new E-Class, C-Class, and M-Class) with trapezoidal openings framed by sharp leading edges. There’s also a new diamond-studded grille pattern as seen on premium variants of the A-Class.
New on the car are new full LED headlights – Mercedes dubs them Multibeam LED – which incorporate active cornering and are camera controlled for automatic high beam usage.
Like Audi’s Matrix LED system, now standard on the Audi A8 luxury limo, the headlights consist of 24 LED segments which are individually dimmable and controllable.
The CLS also gets a considerable drivetrain upgrade: New to the CLS line-up is the ‘400’ series engine (as seen in the C-Class and M-Class), a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 with 333bhp that replaces the old 3.5-litre, naturally-aspirated V6 with 306bhp.
Torque output, acceleration and efficiency are also improved, at 480Nm, 5.3 seconds and 8.0L/100km with 186g/km of CO2, respectively. It comes mated to the improved 7G-Tronic plus seven-speed automatic box now endemic to the Mercedes range.
Interestingly, all the other CLS variants have a new, nine-speed gearbox, including the diesel Bluetec models CLS 220, CLS 250 and CLS 350, plus the V8 petrol CLS 500. We absolutely loved the S 350 Bluetec, so a CLS 350 Bluetec should be predictably good.
Diesel variants are not announced for local sale as yet, although you can be quite sure the CLS 500 and CLS 63 AMG models will be available on indent.
