Lamborghini has set a new record for the fastest SUV to conquer the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the new Urus

COLORADO SPRINGS, USA

Another day, another speed record, this time it’s Lamborghini who has set the pace. The Italian supercar maker has broken the record for the fastest production SUV to conquer the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the Urus. This follows on from fellow Volkswagen Group brand Porsche setting a new lap record for EVs round the Nurburgring with the Taycan.

The Pikes Peak record was set at the hands of hillclimb champion and Pirelli test driver Simone Faggioli, who drove the car up iconic 156 turn, 20km route up a seven percent gradient average to an ultimate finishing altitude of 4,302 metres. The Urus set a time of 10 minutes 32.064 seconds, beating the previous record of 10 minutes 49.902 seconds set by Rhys Millen in 2018 in a Bentley Bentayga.

The car that set the record was a camouflaged version of an upcoming Urus model that has not yet been offered for sale, and Lamborghini made only light modifications to the car, including fitting it with a roll cage and a fire extinguishing system, as well as replacing the regular seats with a race seat with six-point harness. The 22-inch tyres on the record-setting Urus were specially developed by Pirelli, and are an evolution of the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres found on the regular Urus.
