Germany’s KBA transport authority approves Level 4 autonomous driving in defined areas

BERLIN, GERMANY

Mercedes-Benz and German tech giant Bosch have announced that they have received government approval for a fully automated self-parking software to begin operations in Germany.

The technology will enable cars to drive themselves into pre-booked parking spots at a Stuttgart Airport carpark.

Bosch states that the guidance software relies on communication with sensors in the parking location to detect obstacles in its path, and for now has only been approved for use in one carpark location at the Stuttgart Airport which is fitted with the technology. Furthermore, due to technology compatibility, the function will be available for Mercedes-Benz drivers owning an S-Class or EQS produced from July 2022 onwards.

Mercedes-Benz and Bosch initially received approval in 2019 to begin using the automated valet parking system at the Mercedes-Benz Museum parking garage in Stuttgart, Germany, but have been cooperating to develop a fully automated driverless parking system since 2015.

Germany passed a law in July 2021 that allows Level 4 autonomous driving, which means no human involvement in moving the vehicle, in defined operating areas of public spaces.

At the Stuttgart carpark, eligible Mercedes-Benz car owners can book a parking spot ahead of time via an app and leave their vehicle in a drop-off area. As soon as they get out, the car will automatically drive itself to its spot, and can be called back out again via the app.

While it is still baby steps for self-driving cars within tight spaces, and clearly still years away from applicable in Singapore with our ever-smaller parking spaces in public areas, the ability for cars to almost operate themselves within small spaces are very much mainstream with many luxury cars having the ability to navigate themselves into parking spaces, with varying levels of success.
