Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 2019 Review: Show N' Go

Most Singaporeans will plump for the less powerful CLA 180 or CLA 200 models, but the CLA 250 with a 2.0-litre 223hp engine is well worth it for the added oomph

MUNICH , GERMANY – We’ve put the new Mercedes-Benz CLA to the CarBuyer Singapore test in CLA 200 form – that car packs a 1.33-litre, 163hp engine, but here we also drive the more powerful CLA model, the 250, which packs a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 224hp.
The livery here is special Edition 1 paintwork and is offered only for the first year of a model’s production – it isn’t likely to be offered in Singapore. Additionally the CLA 250’s will be offered only on an indent basis in Singapore, and in front-wheel drive, omitting ‘4Matic’ all-wheel drive.

Quantifiers aside, we found the 250 to be a considerably more pleasing experience, with a drivetrain to suit the CLA’s more mature, refined driving experience.

The 2.0 has much of the same smooth power delivery, but the increased torque is summoned up quicker, and the engine sounds and feels far more comfortable with holding revs, delivering an ear-tickling soundtrack to match the higher pace.

The ‘buts’ are that ostensible buyers will have little chance to use the extra power in Singapore, and the 250 is in danger of being a higher-performance middle child, with the existence of the newly-announced CLA 35 being confirmed.
The price gulf between the CLA 250 and CLA 200 was just S$12k for the previous model. The Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) might mix that around some, but for CLA buyers who want a little more, the improved sound, feel, and performance of the 2.0 are worth looking into.
