Elegant new Mercedes two-door has 1.6 or 2.0-litre engines, prices start from $183,888 with COE

SINGAPORE — Mercedes-Benz launched its all-new C-Class coupe here on May 26, in an event at the Mercedes-Benz Centre on 301 Alexandra Road.

Based on the current W205 sedan, the new C-Class coupe is significantly larger than before: It’s 95mm longer, at 4,686mm, and 40mm wider at 1,801mm.

At 1,405mm high, it’s longer, wider and low, which set off the new, svelte design nicely. You can see the inspiration of the new coupe comes from larger Mercedes models, most notably the handsome S-Class coupe.

There’s 80mm more space between the wheels, with the car’s 2,840mm wheelbase identical to the sedan’s.

At launch, three model variants are available, C 180, C 200 and C 300.

The C 180 has a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, and is the entry level model, while the other two 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines. Performance specs and prices as listed below.

CarBuyer tested the sedan model of the C 200 at its launch in 2014 and found it suitably impressive.

The C 180’s equipment highlights include automatic seatbelt feeders (no more awkward stretch to grab your belt), sport seats in Artico leather, basic Audio 20 sound system, keyless entry and start, electric front seats, selectable drive modes and ‘Agility Control’ suspension.

The C 200 gets additional leather upholstery, different exhaust pipes and full LED headlights, while the range-topping C 300 has, on top of that, a sports exhaust system, Burmester surround sound hifi,  and 18-inch wheels.

The more powerful AMG models will be arriving later this year. We can expect a C 450 AMG model with all-wheel drive and a 500bhp-plus C 63 model as well, likely in the third quarter of 2016.

The new coupe replaces the previous model, based on the previous W204 C-Class, but which also provided the basis for the previous E-Class Coupe model. That model was a decent drive, though dynamically it wasn’t a match for its competitors like the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5, and toward the end of its life, began to look aged.

Still, if luxury coupes are your thing, Mercedes intends to be your go-to brand. The carmaker is currently in the middle of product offensive that saw the luxury automaker launch five new or redesigned coupes last year.
