Space and Practicality

No surprise here, but the new GLA’s added height, width and wheelbase create a noticeably roomier cabin than before. Things have particularly improved in the back, where it’s now possible to stretch out a bit. The last GLA was the most comfortable small Mercedes to sit in, and until the seven-seat GLB arrives, the same is true of this GLA.

Mind you, having space is one thing, and what you do with it is another. In that sense the GLA is more versatile than before, and it gains one feature that rivals have in the form of rear seats that slide and recline. You can move the back seats forward by 14cm, and the backrests have seven different angles of incline.

That’s more for luggage than people, however. One way to look at the rear seats’ ability to move is that doing so lets you expand the boot, bit by bit. Luggage capacity starts at 435 litres but grows to 1,430 litres if you drop the rear seatbacks, which you can’t actually do when you’re standing at the boot opening.

Still, it’s hard to see anyone complaining about the GLA’s versatility. If you’re a family man, it should fit your needs nicely. Same if you’re a man with hobbies that give you an excuse to buy lots of things.
