Having jumped into a super hot segment, the GLA has no shortage at all of rivals. Mercedes’ traditional arch enemies would be happy if you bought an Audi Q3 or BMW X1, of course, and both cars are hugely competitive — neither are particularly sparkling to drive, but they offer lots of boot space, the Audi has plenty of connectivity, and the X1 feels huge in the back.

But there’s no reason to stop there. Given that the GLA 200 Progressive costs S$176,888 with certificate of entitlement, there’s an enormous range of possible contenders for your cash. In fact, it’s easy to spend less without feeling like you’ve compromised. The Lexus UX is more compact but sharper to drive and very refined, for starters. The Mazda CX-5 offers sleek looks, a high quality cabin and lots of space inside.

One of our favourite cars in the class is Skoda Karoq, which has an unusually versatile cabin (the rear chairs lift out of the car entirely) and a peppy engine that’s paired with a grippy chassis. Toyota’s Harrier is a popular choice, too, offering exec-car levels of comfort and plenty of room in the cabin.

For this much money, the SUV hunter is spoilt for choice.
